WBWC, Baldwin Wallace University’s student-run radio station, has reached new heights as of late with a recent successful Radiothon fundraiser and the addition of WBWC-2, a secondary sports broadcast.
Much of the orchestration behind these projects was done by general manager Alex Dettmer. His hard work, dedication to the station, and good relationship with WBWC staff earned him the title of general manager in the summer of 2025, a role that lasts all school year round.
One of the big tasks that Dettmer helped spearhead was WBWC’s Radiothon. When the Communications of Arts and Sciences branch at BW received heavy cuts, Dettmer knew it would be on his shoulders to raise the necessary funds to keep improving the quality of the station. With a goal of raising 8,000 dollars, Dettmer, alongside his fellow board members, organized a weeklong campaign in October 2025 to achieve the necessary funds for educational opportunities and equipment upgrades. WBWC ended up raising a total of $12,981.80, far exceeding the initial goal.
“I’m really impressed with what we were able to do,” Dettmer said. “We…laid out the framework for this to just become a yearly fundraiser to increase our quality of broadcasts.”
Another major accomplishment that Dettmer orchestrated was in November 2025, when the station launched WBWC-2, an online-only streaming platform where listeners can tune in for sports broadcasts. Because of an increased number of student broadcasters and more games to be called, WBWC-2 was created to allow for two broadcasts to happen simultaneously.
This also allows for more widespread sports coverage and representation across the board at the station. Basketball has tended to be WBWC’s main focus in years past. However, WBWC-2 now allows for WBWC to give other sports the attention and highlight they deserve while still putting on basketball broadcasts.
“We’ve started men’s volleyball the earliest we’ve ever covered it,” Dettmer said. “We’re starting to cover baseball the earliest we’ve ever covered it, and we’re starting our coverage of men’s and women’s lacrosse the earliest we’ve ever done it.”
In addition to this, Dettmer has had to keep the station running amidst unforeseen crises. From dealing with a leak in the studio, multiple power outages, and a failed hard drive, Dettmer has learned to keep his cool, address the problem at hand, and got it fixed in a timely manner to keep Cleveland’s modern rock alternative spinning on the air waves.
“Keeping [the radio station] running 24/7 is a big task, but really, it’s just keeping your cool while everything is seemingly on fire around you,” Dettmer said.
In the future, Dettmer’s main goal is getting as many students involved in WBWC as possible. For Dettmer, it’s not about what major students are in or what broadcast experience a student comes in with, but rather expanding WBWC to anyone who is interested in growing in their broadcast journey.
