Pirates, witches, superheroes, zombies, minions, Mario and a secret service agent were among those dancing in the Student Activity Center during the Oct. 30 Halloween party.
Mid-Night Madness and Allies sponsored the dance, which also included a photo-booth, costume contest and haunted house set up in the balcony of the BW Student Activities Center. This marks the thirteenth year for the Allies’ annual Halloween dance.
Student Council also had a booth at the dance, promoting President Barack Obama’s new “It’s On Us” initiative.
“We uphold the tradition because it provides a fun and safe environment for everyone to be themselves,” Elise Bigley, junior film studies major and one of the Allies officers that helped organize the dance, said. “That’s really Allies’ biggest goal. We want all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, to feel welcome on campus, and I think the dance really allows for that.”
This campaign is aimed at raising awareness of and putting an end to sexual assault on college campuses. Senior Kevin Warman, student body President, spoke a few words at the dance urging students to stop at the student council’s booth to sign the itsonus.org online petition.
The pledge urges students to recognize sexual assault as non-consensual sex, to identify and intervene in a possible situation of sexual assault, and to create an environment of support for victims.
