Baldwin Wallace College Democrats welcomed two political candidates for the November 4 election, Richard Javorek and Roslyn Painter-Goffi.
Javorek is running for the Ohio House of Representatives for the 69th district and Painter-Goffi is running for the  State Board of Education.
The students and candidates spent the evening getting to know each other and discussing topics which included education issues, the candidates’ political campaigns and ways to get involved.
“Having political candidates speak at BW gives students a chance to hear from the candidates in the area, in order to make informed decisions for election day,” Meghan Dailey, President of BW College Democrats, said.
Javorek is a Baldwin Wallace alumnus from the class of 1972, graduating with a Bachelor   of Arts in History and a minor in Political Science. He went on to receive his Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Kent State University.
Javorek began his political career while at BW by participating in the Student Government. “You are going to college preparing you for big things,” Javorek said.
Javorek previously taught at Bryant and Stratton College and Brunswick City Schools. He loves the teaching profession, and uses it as his motive to run for the Ohio House of Representatives.  His goal is to be the voice of the people and to do right by the children.
“I cannot stand by and watch the profession that I love be reduced to bottom lines and numbers on charts.  Students are our nation’s future, and they are the ones who will pay in the future for our mistakes today,” Javorek said.
His platform focuses on responsible budgeting on the state level, effective economic development of the state and region as well as equal pay for equal work.
“I am running for the State Board of Education because I believe that I can help. It is easy to sit on the sidelines with your opinions and critique. But I know that if you truly want to make a difference, you need to roll up your sleeves and get involved,” Roslyn Painter-Goffi said.
Painter-Goffi is running for the Ohio State Board of Education.  She is a strong advocate of the public school system and  wants to ensure that children everywhere in Ohio are able to receive a great education. Additionally, she believes that educational excellence will only occur when administrators and teachers work together.
Painter-Goffi has a Bachelor’s degree in English from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh and her teaching license from Duquesne University.  Her experience includes over 30 years experience as a teacher and librarian.
