The musical “Star Machine,” produced by Arts Management seniors and written by a Baldwin Wallace student and alum, brothers Hank and Gideon Temple, will have its world premiere in late April at Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland.
“The musical, a comedy about two sisters competing in a TV talent show with one desperate for fame and the other for approval, has gone on a journey throughout BW,” said Bryan Bowser, Program Director and Associate Professor of Arts management and Entrepreneurship.
“They did a concert version of it about a year and a half ago, and it’s now going to have its world premiere at Playhouse Square, being performed by BW Music Theatre students, and being produced by BW Arts Management seniors, which is pretty cool.” Bowser is also the Associate Dean of Theatre Arts & Entrepreneurship and the Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies.
“BW Arts Management seniors have gotten the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals at Playhouse Square,” said Bowser. “Students are also getting the chance to learn the differences in working on a brand new show versus one that has been previously produced,” he added.
“Star Machine” is not only coming to Cleveland. The entire cast will travel to New York City to perform for Broadway investors and producers who will offer feedback as well as “consider helping us take it to whatever the next stage of its development might be,” said Bowser. The director of the Broadway revival of the musical “Godspell” is also contributing to the musical and industry presentation.
According to local high school student Dallas Graham, the efforts of BW Arts Management seniors have also inspired the younger generation. “Hearing about the professional opportunities BW has to offer has made a career in the arts a goal of mine,” said Graham.
“Star Machine” has sold out all four shows running at Playhouse Square from April 24-26.
