Swimming and Diving Teams Take 4th in OAC Championship
The Baldwin Wallace Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Team competed in the 2022 OAC Swimming and Diving Championship over the course of 3 days, with both teams finishing fourth overall.
The meet was held in the Ocasek Natatorium at the University of Akron and hosted by the University of Mount Union.
On day one of the tournament, on the women’s team, Senior All-OAC Bella Ratino won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.14. First-year All-OAC swimmer Mallory Dondorfer won the 200-yard individual medley with f 2:1.29. In the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Dondorfer, Ratino, Julia Newbound, and Tia Reed placed second with 4:03.69.
After day one of the OAC Championships, the team stood in fourth place.
On day two, Sophomore Tia Reed won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.18. Reed earned her first career All-OAC honors. Junior All-OAC Newbound placed sixth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.53. With two days in the books, the team remained in fourth place.
On day three, Ratino won the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:16.15 earning yet another All-OAC honor, her 11th in her career. Dondorfer won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.80, marking her third All-OAC honors in the OAC Championships. Reed placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke with 2:25.96. Reed’s time earned her second career All-OAC honors.
On the third and final day of the OAC Championship, the Women’s Swim and Diving Team season ended as they placed fourth in the tournament.
On the men’s side, on the first day of the tournament, first-year Austin Kingsley placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with 4:49.82 and first-year Tommie McQueary placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:56.75. The 200-yard freestyle relay team consisting of first-year Luke Minick, McQueary, first-year Will Bolin, and sophomore Mason Kooyman places fourth with 1:27.11 The 400-yard medley relay of first-year Jason Tafoya, Minick, Junior Austin Olsavsky, and McQueary placed third with 3:36.26. After day one, the men’s team took fourth place.
One day two of the tournament, McQueary placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50:96 seconds. Junior Alec McNeil placed ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke with 21:01.36 and first-year Aiden Hicks placed ninth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.24 seconds. The 200-yard medley relay of McQueary, Kooyman, McNeil and Minick placed fourth with a time of 1:37.46. At the end of day two, the men’s team stood in fourth place.
On day three of the tournament, McQueary placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:53.91. McQueary broke the school record in the event by 4 seconds.
“I went into the meet knowing I wanted the record,” McQueary said. “And it was surreal to see that I broke it by 4 seconds.”
Sophomore Grant Doolittle placed ninth in the 200-yard butterfly with 48.01 seconds. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Bolin, Kingsley, Kooyman, and Olsavsky finished fourth with a time of 3:12:88.
The Men’s Swimming and Diving Team finished fourth at the OAC Championship to end their season.
