New Kid in Town: BW Women’s Rugby Team
September 10, 2014
This fall, the Baldwin Wallace women’s rugby team is looking to take the school by storm.
New to campus this semester as a club sport, the group has a long list of goals that they want to accomplish during their first season which includes winning as many games as possible.
Led by junior captain Rikki Hula, who also helped to create this new club, the team wishes to become an important and positive part of the BW community.
Along with that, the team wants to create an environment where other women that want to join the team can feel welcome to join. “My team is basically my family,” Hula said.
Going with the motto “Fifteen as One,” Hula thinks that the team has the potential to become a varsity sport in the next few years and encourages any woman that wants to be a part of the team to come to any of their open practices at Wallace Lake.
Practice times are usually from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.
“You don’t need experience to come play with us, don’t be afraid,” Hula said.
Hula believes that they can not only be competitive but also score points and win games this year. “If we’re gonna do it we’re gonna go all in.”
This club was not created overnight though. A lot of hard work has gone into its creation.
A charter had to be written, players needed to be recruited, paperwork needed filled out and numerous funds needed to be, before this team could be a reality, not to mention the blood, sweat and tears this team puts into every practice in preparation for the upcoming season.
All of the hard work that has gone into the rugby team is only just the beginning.
Hula has a long journey ahead of her with the rest of her teammates if she is going to accomplish all of the goals she has set out for this team.
If the creation of this club is any indication of what is yet to come, look for Hula and the rest of the BW women’s rugby team to make an impact on campus this fall.
If you’re interested in supporting the new club on campus, check them out at their first game Saturday, September 13th, at Oberlin, and if you are interested in joining or have any questions email [email protected] for more information!
