Wrestling team’s win streak hits 17

The Yellow Jackets are ranked No. 9 in Division III.

The No. 9 ranked Yellow Jackets wrestling team took home four straight wins in the Mount Union duals.

The team won 24-16 against No. 6 Messiah, 39-9 against Alma, 45-9 over Greensboro and 43-3 against Wilkes College. These wins pushed the Jackets to 5-0 on the season and kept them ranked in the top 10 of all of Division III.

Senior Gabe Mahaney won three matches by pinfall in the tournament, and senior Chris Doyle also turned in an undefeated weekend.

Juniors Anthony Arroyo and Richie Burkes were able to pick up three wins on the weekend as well, and these four wrestlers continue to be ranked in the top ten of their respective weight classes.

When asked about his thoughts, Mahaney said, “Bringing home four wins this weekend was big. Being able to pull out the win against Messiah was very exciting and our most fulfilling win.”

“That dual has come down to heavyweight all four years that I’ve been here, and this is the first time we won. It was a great win and something that we plan to build off of.”

Following their perfect weekend at the Mount Union Duals, BW took on the Ohio Northern Polar Bears on Tuesday, November 28th.

The Yellow Jackets won by a score of 23-9, extending their record to 6-0 on the season. This win also signified the team’s 17th straight win dating back to last season.

BW was led by sophomore 141-pounder Aaron Kelley as he pinned his opponent in 3:30 minutes.

On the horizon for the Yellow Jackets are the New Standard Corporation Invitational, the Waynesburg Duals, and the Gator “Boots” Duals in December. They will look to continue their hot streak.
