Women’s soccer gets OT win with 24 seconds left

This past weekend, the Baldwin Wallace Women’s Soccer team defeated Waynesburg in an exciting 1-0 overtime victory, extending their current win streak to four games. BW led in all categories of the game including corner kicks and shots on goal, but they were unable to find the back of the net during regulation. The Yellow Jackets continued to dominate in the first overtime period having three shots on goal in the first five minutes. Then, with 24 seconds left in the first overtime period, Junior Midfielder Cydney Granneman scored the game winner for the team. Following the game, Coach Jim Wotjkun had a few words to say going into their next game against Grove City. “The team was gritty. They battled all game, maintained strong defensive shape, and were positive in transition and dictated rhythm,” Wotjkun said. “Waynesburg matches our intensity, but we were unlucky not to have scored in regulation. In OT we came out hard and pressed the game. We got the corner and we put it in, so it was a well-deserved win.”

Unfortunately, the lady Yellow Jackets were unable to make the adjustment they needed and fell 3-1 against Grove City on September 24th. It was quiet for the first 30 minutes, but then the Wolverines were able to break through our defense and score two goals in five minutes. The Yellow Jackets did well controlling the possession, but the Wolverines were the first to capitalize early in the second half extending their lead to 3-0. The Yellow Jackets were able to get one back in the 73rd minute when Junior midfielder Kaitlin McGuire followed up her blocked shot putting it into the top left corner for her first goal of the year. However, it was just not enough to help muster a comeback.

The women’s soccer team will look to bounce back in their next game on Wednesday October 2nd. The Yellow Jackets will be taking on Ohio Wesleyan at Tressel Field in their last non-conference game of the year. The game starts at 7 pm.
