Tennis teams finding footing in early play

Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jacket Tennis is in full swing with the Men’s and Women’s team’s now underway.

The women’s team kicked off their season earlier this month at Franciscan on September 3rd.

After defeating Franciscan at the Belleview Tennis Courts, the team returned home to take on Notre Dame College. BW was defeated 7-2 and fell to 1-1 on the season.

The team then traveled to the ITA Central Region Championships at Kalamazoo College.

Their doubles team of Ashtyn Morris and Jayde Robinson made it to the second round of consolation matches after dropping their initial match. In singles play both players fell in the first round.

Head Coach Dean Morse began his second season coaching the Jacket’s, and as senior student-athlete here at Baldwin Wallace, Morse lead the team to a 22-0 season and an OAC championship.

As a coach, BW finished the 2018 season with an OAC quarterfinal appearance following a 4-14 record (4-4 in OAC play). Looking at the Yellow Jacket roster senior Academic All-OAC Becca (Medina.) Liebler hopes to lead the Jackets as the only senior on the roster, BW also rosters three juniors; Emma Hubbard, an all OAC selection in 2018, Ashtyn Morris, an All-OAC honorable mention selection in 2018 as well as being an Academic All-OAC selection, and Jayde Robinson, an All-OAC second-team selection in 2018.

The Jackets also welcome 5 incoming freshmen, Kailin Breedlove (Parma) Elizabeth Cole (Shaker Heights), Kamryn DiRocco (Copley), Carey Shaffer (Sharon), and Gina Upholzer (Strongsville). BW Womens Tennis continues their fall season at Adrian Thursday September 26th at Adrian and finish with the Nancy & Harvey Heath Gator Invitational.

The Baldwin Wallace men’s tennis team opened up their season strongly, in a non-record invitational at Oberlin College on September 21.

Leading the team was freshman Troy Kernan, who in singles play defeated opponents from Grove City and John Carroll en route to a 3-0 day.

Following Kernan was senior, All-OAC, Jake Elbin who completed the day at 2-1.

Also competing for the Yellow Jackets was Michael Benotti who went 1-1 in singles play, building off the success he had in singles competition last season.

The Yellow Jackets also competed in doubles matches, as Elbin and Kernan collected a victory in doubles play as well as the duo of Benotti and Eddie Schartman.

As a team, in singles play the Yellow Jackets went a combined 6-10, and in doubles play they went 2-7. They will look to rebound on October 4th when they travel to Kalamazoo College in Michigan for the ITA Central Region Championships.
