The Baldwin Wallace University men’s swimming and diving team finished their season on Feb.16 finishing fourth in the OAC Championships hosted by Wilmington College at the University of Akron.

Following the first day of competitions, Baldwin Wallace was off to a slow start, finishing fifth of five teams with only 59 points.

Despite the start, three school record were broken by Michael Lewis, who finished third in the 200-yard individual medley, Michael Morsch who set the record for 100-yard backstroke during the 400-yard team medley and by the 400-yard medley relay team of Michael Morsch, Michael Lewis, Matthew Butt, and Greg Shaw.

Baldwin Wallace finished the second day of competition on an upward jolt as they tied with Wilmington for the fourth place spot with a total of 199 points.

Morsch led the Yellow Jackets by beating his previous school-record time in the 100-yard backstroke that he set the night before.

He beat it once in the preliminaries and then again in the finals finishing with a time of 52.77 seconds.

On the final day of competition, the Yellow Jackets sealed the deal finishing in the fourth place spot for the second year in a row with a total score of 310 points.

There was nothing but positive comments from head coach Laura Demaline after their 2018-2019 season concluded.

“I am very happy with how our team performed this year. We had so much strength coming from our freshman, sophomore and junior classes that it foreshadows great things for this program,” said Demaline.

“On the men’s side, we had record-breaking performances by freshman Michael Lewis in the 200 IM, sophomore Michael Morsch in the 100 and 200 backstroke and junior Gregory Shaw in the 200 butterfly. The 200 backstroke record that Morsch broke was the oldest record on the board set back in 1993. All in all, it was a great weekend for our team. We had 99 percent season best times and 88 percent of our swims were lifetime best times.”

Demaline thought her team swam well in every event throughout the season and that was very apparent through a certain statistic.

“One of the coolest statistics though was that 100% of our athletes scored in the meet by making it to the top-16 in at least one of their events,” said Demaline. “I am very proud of how hard the team worked this season—they truly earned all of their achievements with grit and determination.”
