Men’s tennis prepares for ITA regional championship

The Baldwin Wallace University men’s tennis team competed in the Oberlin Invitational on September 16.

In the invitational, the Yellow Jackets had three players, senior Roger Boyer, junior Jake Elbin and sophomore Michael Benotti, come away with a 3-0 record in singles play. In more singles action, senior Matt Harris recorded two victories.

In doubles play, the Jackets registered an overall record of 4-5. The tandem of Dominic Polifrone and Harris pick up an 8-0 victory against non-conference opponent in Earlham College (Ind.) but took an 8-3 loss when they went up against Allegheny College (Pa.).

Benotti and freshman Edwin Schartman went 1-1 in the third doubles spot, picking up their victory with a score of 9-7 against the host, Oberlin. Boyer and Elbin won their only doubles match as they shut out Tiffin University.

The team will round out its fall schedule as they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships hosted by Washington University-St. Louis.

In the tournament, Polifrone and Harris will compete in the main draw, with five other Yellow Jackets participating in the B draw.

“This is very competitive tournament and brings some of the best Division III tennis talent around,” said Harris, “I hope we can make a run my senior year.”

After this tournament, the Yellow Jackets will look to regroup as they come back in the spring with non-conference matches against Penn St.-Behrend (Pa.), Defiance College and Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.) in early February.
