Women’s Golf

The Baldwin Wallace University women’s golf team finished seventh of 18 teams at the Ohio Wesleyan University Laura Bump Tournament at the Mill Creek Golf Club on Sunday, April 13.
BW, now 57-25-1 overall, carded rounds of 347 on Saturday and 345 strokes today for a total of 692 strokes on the par-71 and 5,834-yard Mill Creek G.C. layout. Wittenberg University was the team champion.
In the first round, BW was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference standout Emilee Woolf, this week’s OAC Women’s Golfer of the Week, with an 81. She was followed by senior All-OAC player Miranda Cunningham with an 85, senior All-OAC player Rebecca Jones with a 90, sophomore Laura Vidmar with a 91 and junior Jenna Andreas with a career-low 106.
In the second round, BW was led by Woolf and Cunningham as they both posted scores of 83. Woolf had a two-day total of 164, while Cunningham shot a 168. Vidmar carded a 89 for a weekend total of 180. Jones shot a 90 totaling 180 for the tournament.
BW returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27 when it hosts the 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the Columbia Hills Country Club. The winner of the OAC Tournament advances to the 2014 NCAA Division III National Tournament. BW has won two of the past three OAC titles.

Men’s Tennis

The Baldwin Wallace University men’s tennis team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University, 8-1, on Sunday, April 13 in the final of three matches at the Linder Family Tennis Center this weekend.  BW swept the three matches as it beat Muskingum University, 9-0, and topped Marietta College, 9-0, yesterday.
With its win, BW is 16-2 overall and 6-1 in the OAC and has won nine straight matches. Heidelberg falls to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.
The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 after doubles play as the number one tandem of sophomores Peter Harris and Doug Ganim won, 8-4, to improve to 19-3 overall. The No. 2 duo of junior Kyle Patterson and senior Brad Minrovic also won, 9-7, to improve to 18-2 overall. The No.3 tandem of senior Zach Elbin and freshman Kevin Fredrick won, 8-3, to improve to 13-4 this season.
In singles action, Patterson won at No.1 by the scores of 6-1 and 6-2 and is now 12-7 overall. Harris won at No.2 by a 6-1 and 6-0 count and is 15-5 overall. Ganim won at No.3 by the scores of 6-1 and 6-1 and is 18-3 overall. Freshman Nathan Katz won at No.4 by a 6-3 and 6-2 score and improved to 15-7. Fredrick won 6-0 and 6-2 to improve to 4-2 overall.

Women’s Lacrosse

The Baldwin Wallace University women’s lacrosse team won its school-record 10th straight as well as its first-ever Ohio Athletic Conference game with a 24-4 victory against Wilmington College on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on Saturday, April 12. The 24 goals scored set the school-record for goals in a game.
During the 10 game winning streak, the Yellow Jackets (11-2, 1-0 OAC) outscored its opponents 183-69; including 119-31 over the last six games.
BW was led by freshman midfielder Sierra Thomas who scored a game-high and school-record tying six goals. Freshman midfielder Maddie Russell and junior midfielder Cara Wood each tallied four goals and added two assists. Senior attack Colleen Bodkin contributed four goals and added one assist. Junior midfielder Victoria Budzyn added three goals and two assists while senior attack Becky Russell scored two goals and added one assist. Freshman midfielder Katie Kocher had a game-high four assists.
Wilmington (0-10, 0-1 OAC) was led by Sammy Koerner with two goals.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring just 14 seconds into the game when Budzyn scored her 19th goal of the season. The Quakers tied the game at 1-1 when Koerner scored the free position shot goal at the 28:09 mark. BW responded with four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead when Bodkin found the back of the net off the assist from Becky Russell with 17:23 remaining. After another Wilmington goal that made the score 5-2, the Yellow Jackets scored nine unanswered goals to close out the first half and led 14-2 at the intermission.
BW scored seven more goals to open the second half to take a commanding 21-2 lead on the fourth goal of the game for Maddie Russell of the third assist for Kocher at the 16:53 mark. The Quakers scored their third goal of the game to cut the lead down to 21-3 when Rachel Gutowski scored the man-up goal with 13:47 remaining. The Yellow Jackets outscored Wilmington 3-1 down the stretch.
The final home game is on Wednesday, April 23 when the team hosts the University of Mount Union in an OAC game on the Tressel Field at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s Track and Field

The Baldwin Wallace University women’s outdoor track and field team placed third at the annual All-Ohio Division III Championship Meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University at Selby Field.
The BW women scored 114.5 points to rank third of 18 teams.
The Yellow Jacket women were led by sophomore All-American Melanie Winters who won the seven-event heptathlon last weekend (competed at the University of Mount Union) with an NCAA Division III-leading 4,743 points. She also won the 100-meter hurdles with a career-best and Division III-leading time of 14.22 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 18’8.75” and the 200-meter dash with a career-best time of 25.06 seconds.  Winters placed second in the high jump by leaping 5’3.75”.
In addition to Winters, sophomore Maggie Urban won the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 163’8”, breaking the mark set by teammate and sophomore All-American Kim Gallavan a month ago.  Gallavan placed first in the women’s shot put throwing a distance of 44’0”, placed second in the discus with a throw of 131’9” and eighth in the hammer with a throw of 149’8”.
Also, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC sprinter Nicole Smith was third in the 400-meter dash in a career-best time of 58.35 seconds, senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC middle distance ace Brooke Hradisky was fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:19.20, sophomore Abby Snow was seventh in the javelin with a throw of 109’0”.  Sophomore Kali Fitro came in sixth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:52.57. Freshman sprinter Katie Richter was eighth in the 100-meter dash in 12.60 seconds.
On April 25-26, BW will host the 2014 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Meet.

Men’s Track and Field

The Baldwin Wallace University men’s outdoor track and field team placed third at the annual All-Ohio Division III Championship Meet hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University at Selby Field.
The BW men were led by junior All-American Brandon Eddy who placed second in last weekend’s (also at Mt. Union) All-Ohio decathlon competition with 6,435 points.
Eddy also finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 172’8” and seventh in the high jump at 6’2”, pole vault at 14’0.25” and 110-meter high hurdles in 15.51 seconds.
