Indoor Track begins

The Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field teams of BW both began play this month on the Harrison Dillard Track inside the Lou Higgins Center.

After the teams participated in an unscored event at the Oberlin Invitational, BW hosted the Dr. William Taraschke Team Challenge.

The women placed second overall, falling to just Mount Union as the team scored a combined 85.5 points, 21 points behind Mount Union. Leading the team was senior All-American distance runner Kelly Brennan won the 3,000 meter in a time of just 10:06.45, topping the school record which she owned by over a full second. That time also gives her a top-10 finish in all of NCAA Division III this season.

Brennan didn’t stop there. In the one mile race Brennan placed first with a time of 5:01.41, which is a top-5 time in the nation this season.

Junior Lizzy Gilreath, freshman Maddie Miller and junior Molina Otte placed first, second and third in the 5,000 meter run, giving the Yellow Jackets a clean sweep. The team also had junior All-OAC distance runner Madison Kile place second in the 800-meter run setting a new personal record of 2:27.92. Finishing up on the track, sophomore All-OAC distance runner Alyssa Laughner and freshman Hailey Borges ran a career best in the mile, and placed third in the 400-meter dash, respectively. In the relay events, BW’s group of Borges, Kile, freshman Jenna Kaiser and senior All-OAC Katie Fowler won the distance medley.

In the field events, the team was led by two senior All-OAC throwers in Jillian Roberts and Brooke Buckhannon. Roberts won the shot put event with a new personal record, and Buckhannon won the weight throw. Freshman jumper Jenna Sirianni placed third in the triple jump.

The men’s team struggled, and collectively put up 48 points placing them fourth in the event. Mount Union also won the men’s portion with 136 points.

The men were led in the field by senior All-OAC thrower Ted Achladis, who placed fourth with a shot put distance of 50 feet, 1.25 inches.

On the track, BW secured four runner up finishes. Freshman ShaDaryll Clark finished second in the 55-meter hurdle with a time of 7.97 seconds. Sophomore David Prather took home second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.13. Junior Andrew Krupp finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a personal record time of 15:48.32. Senior All-OAC distance runner Isaac Wilson capped the day with a third-place finish behind Krupp in the 5,000-meter run.

BW’s relay team, consisting only of freshman, including LJ Tijerina, Alexander Burkhammer, Brandon Stevens and Clark, placed second in the 4×200 meter relay.

Both Yellow Jacket teams hit the track and field again Feb. 7-8 in Michigan for the College Wide Track Classic.
