Following their home opener victory against St. Vincent, the Yellow Jackets traveled to Wooster to face Hanover College and Wooster in the Nan Nichols Classic. The women beat Hanover with a score of 87-77.
On the ensuing day, they came out with a commanding 35-point victory over the tournament hosts, Wooster. That win gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 start to the season.
After winning the Nans Nichols Classic, two BW players were awarded for their performances on the court. Junior All-OAC guard Hannah Fecht and senior Katie Smith were named to the All-Tournament Team with Fecht being named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Fecht nearly averaged a double-double with 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds over the two game span. She did manage to record her first double-double of the season against Hanover.
Smith averaged 15.5 points per game and shot 11-of-19 from the floor, including 6-of-11 from the three-point line.
On Sunday, Nov. 26, the Yellow Jackets returned home for a matchup against Oberlin College. While the end result showed a one-point loss for BW, there is more to the story.
The Yellow Jackets headed into the fourth quarter with a 39-26 lead after dominating in the second and third quarters. Unfortunately, they struggled to find the net in that fourth quarter. They shot 2-10 from the field and 1-5 from the three-point line.
The women ended up being outscored 20-6 in the fourth and losing a one-point heartbreaker, 46-45. Oberlin netted a last-second shot to seal the Yellow Jackets’ fate. Fecht led the team in points with 10 and posted her second double-double of the season. Sophomore Kasey Hughes notched eight points in the loss.
Following the close loss to Oberlin, the Yellow Jackets returned to Ursprung Gymnasium for a conference matchup against Heidelberg. The OAC opener was a repeat of sorts, with the women losing by two points, 58-56.
The Yellow Jackets will head into December with key back-to-back conference contests. They will face Marietta, who is currently at the top of the conference and undefeated at 4-0 (check scores), at home on Saturday Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. Alongside the men’s team, the women will travel to Muskingum to participate in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Dec. 9, inside of Anne C. Steele Center. Monday, Dec. 11, the women will return home for a non-conference matchup with Case Western.
