Baldwin Wallace University’s sport management department is making global experiences, such as attending the Paris Olympics or an F1 race in Montreal, accessible to students of all majors through innovative international programs.
Charles Campisi, the department chair of marketing, sport and hospitality management, said the department is collaborating with other academic programs to enhance student experiences at BW.
“We don’t care what your major is or was,” Campisi said. “If you want to be a part of this department, we will do everything we can to make that happen.”
Campisi said the department has been taking students from all majors for years through study programs in collaboration with various departments, providing a diverse experience that offers multiple perspectives while traveling.
Kaleu Tellas, a senior exercise science and French double major, has studied abroad in Spain, France and Italy, and attended the Olympics this past summer.
“The events have shown me the importance of making connections and learning how to adapt to language barriers,” said Tellas. “I’ve been able to read body language better in order to understand people’s needs.”
Students who attend these events can connect with companies on-site and learn about future career opportunities after graduation. Another aspect of attending international events is the wide variety of companies that provide opportunities and insight into potential career paths.
“I have thought about working for the Paralympic team based in Switzerland,” said Tellas. “I could use my French and exercise science degrees within the sports world.”
In addition to career benefits, these international events also offer invaluable lessons in cultural diversity, teamwork and adaptability.
“The more you can get those students out and experiencing these things, the more doors it will open for them,” Campisi said.
By attending high-profile international events, BW students can gain insights and experiences that set them apart in a competitive job market. Students’ participation in these events enhances their practical skills, making them more attractive candidates to future employers.
The department will send students to an F1 race in Mexico City on Oct. 27. For future events, BW will participate in bringing the global environment to U.S. soil. The World Cup will be held in 2026, and the Olympics are coming to Los Angeles in 2028.
As the department continues to expand its international initiatives, Baldwin Wallace students are being prepared to thrive in the globalized world of sport management and beyond.
