The Yellow Jackets defeated visiting Muskingum University, 23-13, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium before 5,355 fans on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Baldwin Wallace University led 7-0 after one quarter, 13-0 at halftime and 20-7 after three quarters. BW outgained Muskingum, 279 yards to 241 yards, including 195-121 on the ground.
BW was led on offense by junior quarterback Michael Slack, who completed three-of-four passes for 46 yards and ran four times for 32 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with an injury in the first quarter.
The top wide receivers were seniors Kevin Johnson and Dan Reed; each with three receptions. Junior running back Nolan Sordyl led the running game with a career-high 99 yards in 20 attempts. Following the game, Sordyl received the Dick Miller BW Most Outstanding Community Day Player of the Game. Senior linebacker David Flegal led the defense with 11 tackles.
Senior All-OAC placekicker Chris Mohler led the special teams unit with three field goals and two point-after-touchdown (PAT) kicks for 11 points. Senior punter Matt Harmon averaged 46.1 yards in seven attempts with three punts landing inside the Muskingum 20-yard line.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, the BW football team lost to host Otterbein University, 19-7,
The game was tied 0-0 after one quarter; Otterbein led 13-7 at halftime and 19-7 after three quarters. The Cardinals outgained the Yellow Jackets, 391 yards to 301 yards, including 265-138 on the ground.
With its win, Otterbein is 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC and now trails BW 36-9-1 in the all-time series which dates back to 1925.
With its loss, the Yellow Jackets drop to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.
BW was led on offense by Slack who completed 16-of-23 passes for 114 yards and led the ground game with 65 yards in 11 attempts and a touchdown. The top receiver was senior two-time All-OAC wide receiver Josiah Holt, who had nine receptions for 66 yards. This was Holt’s first game of the season after missing the first three with an injury. Junior linebacker Dan O’Brien and Flegal led the defense with 10 tackles apiece.
Tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 12, BW hosts OAC-rival Ohio Northern University on Homecoming on Tressel Field inside The George Finnie Stadium in Berea at 2 p.m.. Also, between the first and second quarter, the University will recognize members of the school’s 1978 NCAA Division III National Championship team who have returned to campus to celebrate the 35th anniversary of that occasion.
Prior to the game and at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12, the University will dedicate the new Packard Athletic Center, now known as The PAC, in honor of legendary BW Football Coach and Professor Bob Packard. The facility opened this summer and is the new home of both the Yellow Jacket football and men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.
Volleyball
The Yellow Jacket volleyball team defeated Muskingum University, 3-0, in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams inside the Ursprung Gymnasium.
BW defeated the Fighting Muskies in three sets by scores of 28-26, 25-21 and 25-21, ending BW’s five-match losing streak.
Senior middle hitter Colleen Bonacci led the team offensively with 10 kills. Additionally, senior middle hitter Kayla Harris and senior defensive specialist/outside hitter Taylor Burns each recorded nine kills.
Senior setter Emily Nagle and junior setter Katie Primeau combined for 38 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Shannon Deleur recorded 15 digs and Burns contributed 14.
Deleur’s fifth dig of the game moved her into eighth place on the all-time digs list. She passed Kelsey Hillis (2004-07) who had 1,321.
In addition, Burns moved into 12th place on the all-time digs list, passing Darci Christopher (1997-2000) who had 1,183.
The team lost to 14th nationally-ranked Otterbein University, 3-0, in an Ohio Athletic Conference match on Saturday, Oct. 5.
The Cardinals, 17-4 overall and 2-0 in the OAC, defeated the Yellow Jackets, 8-12 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, by the scores of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-22.
Junior right side hitters Alayna Chlad and Markema Winters each had five kills, leading the Yellow Jackets offensively. Additionally, Bonacci recorded four kills.
Nagle recorded 12 assists and Primeau added nine.
Defensively, Deleur led the way with nine defensive digs.
BW is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when it hosts Ohio Northern University at 12:30 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center on Homecoming.
Men’s Soccer
BW lost to Defiance College, 2-1, at Winsper-Knoble Field on Saturday, Sept. 28.
With its win, Defiance improves to 5-5 overall.
Freshman Patrick O’Malley scored the lone goal for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomores Zach Haynes and Andrew Sismour split time in the goal for BW. The duo faced 11 shots, including four shots-on-goal, allowed two goals and made two saves.
BW outshot Defiance by a 18-11 count and won the battle of corner kicks, 7-2.
The team fell to Oberlin College by a score of 2-0 in the final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
In goal for BW, senior Tyler Beaton faced 11 shots, including six on goal, allowed two goals and made four saves.
The Yellow Jackets outshot Oberlin by a 17-11 count and also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the 11th minute when junior midfielder Ben Deighton scored on a penalty kick to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. This was Deighton’s first goal of the season.
BW took a 2-0 lead at the 52:19 mark when Deighton scored his second goal of the game and his second goal of the season. The assist came from junior midfielder Michale Brennan.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 3-0 at the 55:24 mark when Brennan scored his third goal of the season via an assist from junior defender Bill Gamble.
In goal for BW, Beaton face seven shots, including two shots-on-goal, allowed zero goals and made two saves as he improved to 3-5-2 overall.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Otterbein by an 18-7 count and also had an 17-5 advantage in corner kicks.
BW competes next on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Ohio Northern University.
Women’s Soccer
The Yellow Jacket women’s soccer team defeated host Defiance College, 4-3, on Saturday, Sept. 28.
With its loss, Defiance is now 3-6-1 overall.
BW opened the scoring in the 29th-minute when senior defender Sami Riveron scored her first goal of the season to give BW a 1-0 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets also led 1-0 at halftime. In the 47th-minute of the second half, BW increased its lead to 2-0 when senior midfielder All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Hannah Cavalier assisted senior All-OAC forward Heather Keller.
Cavalier added to BW’s lead to 3-0 when she scored an unassisted goal at the 52:40 mark. The goal was her third this season.
Keller scored her second goal of the game and her sixth of the season in the 54th-minute to give BW a 4-0 advantage, but the hosts were not done yet.
Defiance closed the gap to 4-1 in the 66th minute, added another in the 69th minute, and one more in the 80th minute.
BW outshot Defiance by an 26-6 count and had more corner kicks, 3-2.
The team defeated host Waynesburg University, 2-0, at John F. Wiley Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
With its loss, Waynesburg fell to 3-5 overall.
BW opened the scoring in the eighth-minute when senior defender Riveron assisted Keller to give BW a 1-0 advantage.
In the 40th minute, sophomore forward Cheryl Bell netted the second goal for BW with an assist from sophomore forward Audrie Wolfe. This was Bell’s second goal of the season.
BW outshot Waynesburg by a 21-17 count and had more corner kicks, 8-3.

In goal for BW, Tallmadge faced nine shots, including five shots-on-goal, allowed zero goals and made five saves as she improved to 9-1 overall.
The Yellow Jackets compete next on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Ohio Northern University.
