In week one vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, the Browns lost a game they had no business losing. In week three, the Browns just won a game they had no business winning.
On Sunday, the Browns beat the Green Bay Packers at home, 13-10.
This game can be summed up by a few YouTube comments I saw. One user said that the Browns have a Super Bowl caliber defense. Which is undoubtedly true. The Browns have now, in three consecutive weeks, allowed 43 rushing yards to Chase Brown, 23 to Derrick Henry, and 30 to Josh Jacobs. That is unreal rushing defense against three very good backs.
This defense is truly elite.
But the other comment I saw said that the Browns have “a mediocre high school offense in a non-competitive football state like Delaware.”
Sadly, that also feels like it’s true. The only game the Browns have looked decent in offensively has been against the horrid Bengals defense. These past two weeks, it has been hard to watch. Flacco did not look great against the Packers.
The only thing I was excited about offensively was rookie RB out of Ohio State Quinshon Judkins. He looked fresh and quick, bringing a powerful punch that the Browns desperately needed. The only drives that the Browns scored on were largely due to his large rushes. He finished with 94 rushing yards and a TD.
But man, that defense. Garrett is perpetually double-teamed but still pressured Love. Not only Garrett, but the rest of the line too. The Browns totaled five sacks. The best clip I saw was not even of a sack. It was Garrett beating a Packers’ O-lineman so quickly and easily that the lineman just yelled “Jordan, run!” to his quarterback.

The secondary played well. Despite a few bad penalties and a couple deep throws to Packers’ Matthew Golden, the Browns’ defensive backs was excellent. Denzel Ward had a diving third down deflection that was crucial early in the game. And late in the game, Grant Delpit made possibly the biggest play of the game with a interception and return down to the 4 yard line. Judkins punched it in after. But it was truly an exceptional interception.
I cannot emphasize enough how good of a play this was by Grant Delpit on the INT.

With the game tied 10-10, the Packers’ offense started driving downfield. I was thinking to myself “the one time the Browns defense needs a stop, and they can’t get one.” But then the Browns proved me wrong. With 27 seconds left, the Packers’ field goal was BLOCKED. A blocked kick isn’t something you see often (although there were four this week), and usually special teams errors are on the Browns side, historically.

This set up the Browns for a 55-yard game winning field goal attempt. Now remember, Browns’ kicker Andre Szmyt missed a game-winner in week one against the Bengals. I wouldn’t have been upset if the Browns cut him. But on Sunday, he redeemed himself.
Andre Szmyt was a walk-on kicker at Syracuse, got cut from the Bears, then played in the UFL.
The Browns signed him, but his kicks cost them in Week 1.
This week, Szmyt got another shot—and his first career game-winning FG gave Cleveland its first win. pic.twitter.com/yVH6XHfuEe

Not only did he nail the longest walk-off field goal in Browns history, sending the stadium into a frenzy, but after the game he dedicated the game-winner to his mother who recently passed away. It is moments like this that make sports so beautiful. What a redemptive moment for Szmyt and the Cleveland Browns.
Cleveland now looks ahead to a week four matchup in Detroit against the Lions. The brutal opening stretch for the Browns continues. But if the Browns could beat the Packers, they can certainly beat the Lions. The defense will certainly hold them in check as long as the offense isn’t giving them any opportunities (like they did plenty of against the Ravens).
I expect a decent showing this week, and if Stefanski can figure out how to make the offense work, then there’s a real chance the Browns can ride their incredible defense to a potential playoff spot. Maybe I’m getting my hopes up after one win. But it feels good, doesn’t it? The Browns WON! Let me celebrate while I can. Go Browns!
