Baldwin Wallace University’s Clay Club provides students with the opportunity to experiment with clay in a nurturing environment.
The BW clay club is a student-run organization that, according to the organizations mission statement, focuses on providing students “with the opportunity to learn about ceramics in a nurturing environment that encourages exploration.”
While this organization focuses on learning about ceramics, the experiences that members have are also an important part of the organization.
“New projects, new people, and new experiences are really what defines this club,” Clay Club President Kristen Sperber said.
Experiences such as highlighting student artists, allowing for networking opportunities and the experience of selling their art, as seen in the Clay Club sale.
The Clay Club biannual sale took place on Nov. 18, 21 and the 22 in the Union lobby. This sale encouraged students to get more of the club’s work to BW’s students
“For the sale we always hope to accomplish to get some art out there and into more households,” said Clay Club member Kayla Yeager.
“Personally, I sell my work so that others can enjoy it. Not everything that I make is for myself, and it feels fantastic to watch others’ joy over a work that I was able to create,” said Sperber.
Even though Clay Club receives funding from student government, the Clay Club sale exists to cover other expenses that might not be covered by these funds.
“While we do get funded by student government, we always try to raise a little bit of money for extra that may not be covered by them,” said Yeager.
The club made over $1,000 through their most recent sale, according to their Instagram, @bwclayclub. In addition to raising money for the organization, the Clay Club hopes to bring awareness to the recently cut Art Department.
“From this recent sale, I really hope that what we actually do in Kleist is brought to light. It’s not just where the theater department operates, but it’s also where the Art Department has been able to make a home,” said Sperber. “With the recent cuts of the Art Department and major, I hope that the success of Clay Club and its most recent sale has highlighted the importance, beauty, and value of both Clay Club and the Art Department.”
The Clay Club meets every Thursday at 7:30.
