Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “Requiem for a Dream”) is a director best known for his psychological thriller and drama films. Though his most recent movie, the crime comedy “Caught Stealing,” juxtaposes from his usual content, the film is a joy of a watch. Released theatrically August 29, the movie constantly keeps its audience on its toes and maintains great entertainment value throughout its entire 107-minute runtime.
The plot follows Hank, a bartender and ex-baseball prodigy, who gets mixed up in a world of crime and different gangs when he is asked to babysit his neighbor’s cat. Amid his struggle navigating the 1990s New York City crime scene, he must grapple with his own personal trauma, alcohol abuse and relationships with those he loves.
The film stars Oscar-nominee Austin Butler, who has reached mainstream popularity from his roles in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” and “Elvis.” Due to the frequent ups and downs of the script, Butler gets to show off his acting versatility. From finding the humorous moments in wild car chases to dealing with threats to his life, Butler handles the role convincingly. His chemistry with love interest Yvonne, played excellently by Zoë Kravitz, is evident from their first scene together. Though her character could use development, the duo creates a passionate but real relationship keeping the story alive.
The film also stars Matt Smith, who’s perhaps best known for his roles in the shows “House of the Dragon,” “The Crown” and “Doctor Who.” Smith, who portrays the neighbor who gets Hank into this mess, is the funniest part of the film. Additionally, Regina King’s supporting role adds a first-rate element of badassery to the film, completing an overall effectively entertaining environment of action, chaos and humor.
The film’s screenplay is especially refreshing. Its excitingly unpredictable nature is what stands out from other recent releases of this genre. Every moment defies audience expectations, as the film is full of mischief, betrayal, quick quips, and much to Hank’s dismay, confusion. Despite the potential for constant plot shifts to bewilder audiences, the film is well balanced with explanations and clues to keep it stimulating.
The movie’s technical elements also help to contribute to a pleasant viewing experience. The cinematography finds beauty in the chaos and intrigue in the mundane, capturing the interesting shots even in down-on-luck areas of New York City. Additionally, the soundtrack is also part of an entertaining sound design that helps to add intensity and emotion throughout the movie.
However, the 1990s setting is not properly evident throughout the film. The technology, music, and state of the city don’t stand out as from the past, at least not without large attention to detail. The clothing, though great for the characters, feels like it could blend in with the casual streetwear of today. Though fashion trends from pre-Y2K are still prevalent in 2025, the lack of clear setting in terms of era prevents a deeper understanding of circumstances and potential further immersion into the story.
Despite the unclear time period, Darren Aronofsky’s most recent film “Caught Stealing” has something for everyone! Full of action, wit, twists and turns, the film stands out as original and refreshing compared to most crime genre.
‘Caught Stealing’ is now playing in theaters.
