Sonic the Hedgehog Sequel Wins Box Office Sequel Battle

Following the success of the original film, Paramount Pictures’ “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” has made another box office splash, grossing $241,461,409 million dollars worldwide and placing 4th in the domestic box office for 2022 so far.

Only a few days after its release, “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” is struggling at the box office. Reports show that “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” raked in a bigger total at Easter Monday screenings.

Four days after release, “Fantastic Beasts” has a worldwide total of $192.9 million and has made for a domestic flop. The latest entry in the beloved Harry Potter franchise is on pace to fall far short financially compared to its predecessors. “The Secrets of Dumbledore” so far is earning the lowest box-office returns in the franchise, which does not bode well for its future. Critical reviews sit at a measly 49% positive rating according to aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

There are rumors that Jim Carrey, who plays the main antagonist Dr. Robotnik in both movies, is going to retire after this film.

“I’m fairly serious about retiring, I’ve done enough,” Carrey said in a March interview.  Producers have stated in response that if Jim Carrey decided to retire then they would not replace him in future releases.

The plot follows Dr. Robotnik returning with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of a mystical emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic decides to team up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on an epic journey to find the emerald before Robotnik does.
