In what might prove to be the battle of the year, President Helmer and Provost Stahl will be competing against Baldwin Wallace’s very own championship cornhole athletes, Anthony Kissel and Timmy Jonas.

The two teams will be facing each other in a cornhole tournament celebrating Day of Excellence.

Stahl said he had the idea to challenge Kissel and Jonas after their recent performance in the 2018 American Cornhole League National College Cup in Myrtle Beach, which was featured on ESPN.

“Here are students who have gone on to national excellence in a different area, and we just thought it would be kind of fun,” said Provost Stahl.

Helmer said he was minding his own business one day when Provost Stahl suggested the idea. According to Helmer, Stahl thought it would be fun to have a cornhole challenge before the honors ceremony in Gamble Auditorium.

The two nationally ranked cornhole players, Kissel and Jonas, are ready to take on Helmer and Stahl. Both said they are not doing much to prepare besides attending their regular cornhole practices.

“I play cornhole maybe once a year on Labor Day… and nope, not going to do a thing to prepare,” said Helmer. “Going to go in well-rested and maybe stretch a little bit before we get started.

Stahl, meanwhile, said that his secret weapon is a loose arm and a good attitude.

“I’m going to take the amateur approach and hope age and guile will overcome youth and skills,” said Stahl.

Helmer and Stahl said they are confident in the outcome of this challenge. However, Kissel and Jonas have other ideas of how the tournament will end.

“Beating them—” said Jonas, “—I don’t know what it’s going to be like, but I guess just to watch the president lose.”

The event is open to the Baldwin Wallace community and will be held on April 25 at 3:30 p.m. in Gamble Auditorium.

It will be immediately followed by the Honors Award Ceremony at 4 p.m.
